The Secret Place of God – Biblical Meaning and How to Dwell There
The Bible often speaks of a "secret place" where God dwells, and where His people can find safety, intimacy, and communion with Him. It’s not a physical location, but a spiritual dimension available to every believer who seeks to know God deeply. Understanding what the secret place is, and how to dwell in it, is essential for anyone desiring a close relationship with the Lord.
What is the Secret Place?
The secret place is a metaphor for a personal, intimate relationship with God. It is where we go spiritually to commune with Him in prayer, worship, and meditation on His Word. This place is not visible to the natural eye, but it is real in the life of every devoted believer.
In Psalm 91:1, David writes,
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
To "dwell" means to live, abide, and remain. The secret place is where God invites us to live in continual fellowship with Him, under His protection and guidance.
Old Testament Foundations
David and other psalmists often referred to this place of refuge and intimacy with God.
Psalm 27:5 says,
“For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock.”
Here, David sees God's presence as a tabernacle—a sacred tent—where the soul is hidden from danger and fear.
In Psalm 31:20, we read,
“You shall hide them in the secret of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.”
God’s presence acts as a shield, a sacred covering from the noise, gossip, and battles of life.
Jesus and the Secret Place
Jesus continued this theme in the New Testament. In Matthew 6:6, He instructed His followers: “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
Jesus emphasizes that the secret place is about sincerity. It’s where we meet God without distractions, pretenses, or public displays. It’s the quiet, humble place where our hearts connect deeply with our Heavenly Father.
How to Dwell in the Secret Place
1. Make Time for God Daily
The secret place is entered through prayer and worship. Carve out time to seek God in private. It may be a physical room, but more importantly, it is a spiritual posture—one of reverence and focus.
2. Meditate on the Word
God's voice is heard clearly in the secret place through His Word. Meditating on Scripture brings light, clarity, and strength to the soul.
3. Live in Obedience
The Secret Place is not just about feeling God’s presence—it’s about walking in His ways. A life of obedience keeps the door to that secret place open.
4. Practice Stillness
In a world full of noise, we must quiet our souls to hear Him. Stillness allows us to sense His nearness and receive His peace.
Benefits of the Secret Place
● Protection: Psalm 91 promises safety and deliverance for those who dwell there.
● Peace: The secret place offers rest from anxiety, fear, and worldly pressures.
● Guidance: In stillness, God reveals His will and direction for our lives.
● Intimacy: It is where we grow in knowing God—not just knowing about Him.
The secret place of God is not reserved for pastors, prophets, or spiritual elites. It is for every believer who longs to know God more. It is a sanctuary of the soul where we experience His love, hear His voice, and find shelter under His wings. Today, He is calling you to dwell—not just visit—in that sacred place. Will you enter?
