What is the prayer to stop stealing?

Stealing is a sin that not only breaks the law of man but also violates God's holy commands. Whether it's shoplifting, cheating on taxes, stealing time from work, or taking what doesn't belong to us in any form, God's Word is clear: "You shall not steal" (Exodus 20:15). This prayer is for anyone struggling with the temptation to steal or for someone interceding for another person caught in this sin.

Heavenly Father,

I come to You in the name of Jesus, broken and honest about my sin. You see my heart, my past, and my struggles. I confess that I have stolen—whether through actions, deception, or even thoughts of taking what does not belong to me. Your Word commands clearly in Exodus 20:15, “You shall not steal.” Lord, I have sinned against You and I ask for Your mercy.

I thank You that through Christ, there is forgiveness. As it says in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I receive Your forgiveness and ask that You would not only cleanse me but also transform me.

Change My Heart, Lord

Father, I don’t want to be the same. Change my heart and renew my mind. Stealing is rooted in greed, discontentment, and sometimes fear or desperation. But You have called me to trust in You as my provider. Your Word says in Philippians 4:19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.”

Lord, teach me to be content. Help me to resist the lie that I need to take what’s not mine to survive or succeed. Instead, let me walk in honesty, faith, and diligence. I declare that I no longer belong to the kingdom of darkness but to the kingdom of light, where truth and righteousness reign.

Teach Me Honest Work

Your Word says in Ephesians 4:28, “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.” God, give me the desire and discipline to work with integrity. Provide me with opportunities to earn honestly, and bless the work of my hands.

Break the cycle of poverty, lack, or addiction that drives me to steal. Break the influence of ungodly friends or environments that encourage dishonest gain. I surrender my habits, my temptations, and my fears to You, Jesus.

Walk in the Spirit

Fill me with the Holy Spirit. Your Word tells me in Galatians 5:16, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Lord, I need Your power daily. When temptation rises, help me to flee and to remember that You always provide a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Surround me with godly influences. Help me to restore what I can and make restitution where necessary. Let my life be a testimony of Your grace—that if You can change me, You can change anyone.

Closing

Thank You for Your mercy, Father. Thank You that You are not only a God of justice but a God of redemption. I surrender every selfish desire, every dishonest thought, and every sinful pattern to You. Make me new. Let my hands now be used to build, bless, and serve—not to take.

In the mighty name of Jesus,

Amen.
