 Signs of Lack of Fear of God (Biblical Perspective)

      The fear of God is foundational to a healthy relationship with Him. Proverbs 9:10 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Without it, people live disconnected from God's truth and authority. Throughout Scripture, we see signs that indicate when individuals or nations lack the fear of God. Recognizing these signs can help us examine our hearts and return to a posture of reverence before Him.

1. Persistent Disobedience to God's Commands

      One of the clearest signs of lacking the fear of God is a lifestyle of continual disobedience. God’s Word is not merely advice; it is His command. 1 John 5:2–3 states, "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments." When people consistently ignore God's instructions without conviction or change, it reveals that they do not respect His authority. Obedience flows naturally from a heart that reveres God.

2. Mocking or Dismissing God's Standards

        The Bible warns about scoffers who ridicule God’s promises and truths. 2 Peter 3:3–4 says, "Scoffers will come in the last days... saying, 'Where is the promise of His coming?'" Mocking God's Word or treating it lightly shows a deep disregard for His holiness. When God's standards are seen as outdated, irrelevant, or optional, it is a dangerous sign that His fear is absent from the heart.

3. Pride and Self-Exaltation

        Proverbs 8:13 reminds us, The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way..." Pride exalts self above God and refuses to acknowledge our dependence on Him. A proud heart resists correction, boasts of its own strength, and minimizes the need for God's help. True fear of God produces humility, not self-glorification.

4. Lack of Repentance and Brokenness Over Sin

        David’s prayer in Psalm 51:17 shows that a broken and contrite heart is precious to God. When someone sins and feels no sorrow, no remorse, and no desire to repent, it shows they have lost the fear of offending a holy and just God. A repentant heart reflects a deep awareness of God's purity and our own need for His mercy.

5. Rebellion Against Authority

        Romans 13:1 teaches that all authority is established by God. While not all authorities act righteously, the principle remains that rebellion against rightful authority often mirrors rebellion against God Himself. Disrespect for parents, leaders, and lawful structures can signal a deeper disrespect for God’s sovereign order.

6. Living for the Approval of Men Rather Than God

        Proverbs 29:25 warns, "The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe." When pleasing people becomes more important than pleasing God, it is clear that the fear of the Lord is missing. Those who truly fear God will prioritize His approval above human opinions.

7. No Reverence in Worship

        Jesus said in John 4:24, "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Worship that is mechanical, casual, or entertainment-driven reveals a heart that does not tremble before God's majesty. True worship flows from a heart that is awestruck by God’s holiness and love.

8. Open Blasphemy and Careless Use of God’s Name

        The third commandment in Exodus 20:7 says, "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain." Speaking God’s name lightly, using it in jokes, or attaching it to lies and curses shows profound disrespect. A reverent heart treats God’s name with the utmost honor.

9. Living Without Awareness of Judgment or Eternity

        Hebrews 9:27 reminds us, "It is appointed for men to die once but after this the judgment." When people live as if there are no eternal consequences for their actions, it shows a lack of fear of God's righteous judgment. A healthy fear of God includes living with eternity in view.

10. Hardening the Heart Against God's Voice

        Finally, Hebrews 3:15 warns, "Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts." Continually ignoring the promptings of the Holy Spirit results in a hardened heart. Over time, sensitivity to God's voice diminishes, leading to spiritual blindness and further rebellion.

        The fear of God is not about living in terror but about living in awe, reverence, and submission to Him. It protects us from sin, humbles our hearts, and draws us closer to His presence. If we recognize any of these signs in our lives, it is an invitation to repent and return to the Lord, asking Him to restore His holy fear in our hearts. As Proverbs 14:27 promises, "The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death."
