How Deep Is God's Love for Us? (Ephesians 3:17–19)

      In Ephesians 3:17–19, the Apostle Paul offers a profound prayer for the believers in Ephesus, expressing his desire for them to truly understand the depth of God’s love through Christ. These verses are among the most beautiful and moving in the New Testament. They reveal not only the magnitude of God's love but also its transforming power in the life of a believer.

      Let’s look at the passage:

   “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

Rooted and Established in Love

      Paul begins by saying that believers are "rooted and established in love." The imagery here is powerful. Being “rooted” suggests a plant with deep roots in fertile soil, drawing life and strength from it. “Established” implies a firm foundation, like a building that is grounded securely. In both cases, love is the source and the stabilizing force. God’s love is not a fleeting emotion or conditional response—it is the very foundation of our spiritual life.

Grasping the Full Dimensions

      Paul then prays that we would have the power “to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” These four dimensions—width, length, height, and depth—paint a picture of a love that is truly infinite.

● Width suggests that Christ’s love extends to all people, without partiality. No one is excluded—God’s love reaches across nations, races, and backgrounds.

● Length speaks to the eternal nature of God’s love. It stretches from before time began and will continue into eternity.

● Height reflects how God lifts us up. His love raises us from our brokenness to heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6).

● Depth reveals that God's love reaches into the darkest, most painful parts of our lives. There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.

A Love Beyond Understanding

      Paul continues by saying that this love “surpasses knowledge.” It’s a paradox: Paul prays that we may know something that surpasses knowledge. What does that mean?

      It means that God's love isn't just something to study intellectually—it’s something to experience. No amount of theology or doctrine alone can fully describe it. We must encounter His love personally, through the Holy Spirit, in our daily lives. It is a love that fills the heart, brings peace to the soul, and gives purpose to life.

Filled with the Fullness of God

      Finally, Paul ends this prayer with an awe-inspiring phrase: “that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” To be filled with God’s fullness means to become like Christ—to reflect His character, His holiness, and His love. This is the ultimate goal of the Christian life. As we grow in understanding God’s love, we are transformed from the inside out.

      God’s love is vast, deep, and beyond measure. It is not limited by our failures, our doubts, or our past. Through Christ, we are rooted in love, surrounded by love, and transformed by love. As Ephesians 3:17–19 reminds us, God's love is not something we simply read about—it’s something we can grasp, experience, and be filled with every day. No matter where you are in life, this truth remains: God’s love for you is deeper than you can imagine, and it will never fail.
