Characteristics of the Antichrist: A Biblical Overview
The Bible offers significant insight into a coming figure known as the Antichrist—a person who will rise to global prominence in the last days and stand in direct opposition to God and His people. While the term "Antichrist" is used mainly in the letters of John, the Bible describes this figure with various titles and attributes across Scripture. By piecing these passages together, we gain a clearer understanding of his nature and purpose.
1. Man of Lawlessness and Sin
The apostle Paul describes the Antichrist as “the man of sin” or “man of lawlessness” in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4. He is referred to as the “son of perdition,” a term also used for Judas Iscariot, signifying total rebellion and inevitable destruction. This man will defy God's laws and promote evil, leading many into apostasy.
2. Exalts Himself Above God
In 2 Thessalonians 2:4, Paul writes that the Antichrist will exalt himself above all that is called God and even sit in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God. This self-deification echoes Satan’s original prideful desire to ascend above the Most High (Isaiah 14:13-14). The Antichrist will demand worship and will not tolerate any other form of devotion.
3. Performs False Miracles
The Antichrist will not rise to power through brute force alone. He will deceive many through counterfeit signs and wonders. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 reveals that his coming will be in accordance with Satan’s power, with signs meant to deceive those who reject the truth. These miraculous acts will look divine but will originate from the enemy of God.
4. Charismatic and Deceptive
According to Daniel 11:21, he will come in peaceably and gain power through intrigue and flattery. His rise to influence may appear diplomatic, even admirable at first. He will likely appeal to the world’s desire for peace and unity, offering solutions to global crises, yet underneath lies a deceptive agenda.
5. Blasphemer of God
Revelation paints a clear picture of the Antichrist as a blasphemer. Revelation 13:5-6 says he will speak great things and blasphemies against God, His name, and His dwelling. His words will not only dishonor God but attempt to turn people’s hearts away from heaven.
6. Persecutes the Saints
One of the Antichrist’s most vicious characteristics is his hatred for God’s people. Revelation 13:7 says he will wage war against the saints and overcome them. This persecution will be intense, and many believers will suffer for refusing to worship the beast or take his mark.
7. Powered by Satan
The Antichrist will receive his power directly from the devil. Revelation 13:2 says, “The dragon [Satan] gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.” This unholy alliance will make the Antichrist the visible representation of Satan’s rebellion on earth.
8. Demands Global Worship
The Antichrist will not be content with political or economic power alone. He will demand to be worshiped. Revelation 13:4, 8 speaks of the whole world marveling and worshiping the beast. This will be a global, forced idolatry, unlike anything the world has seen.
9. Controls Buying and Selling
One of the most well-known characteristics is the economic control he will impose. Revelation 13:16-17 says that no one can buy or sell unless they have the mark of the beast. This financial system will test the faith of many and require bold trust in God's provision.
10. Ultimately Destroyed by Christ
Despite his terrifying rise, the Antichrist’s reign is temporary. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 tells us that Jesus will destroy him with the breath of His mouth and the brightness of His coming. Christ’s return will end the Antichrist's deception and usher in God's righteous reign.
