Be Careful What Your Eyes See
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”— Matthew 6:22-23 (NIV)
We live in a visually driven world—images, videos, and media constantly flood our screens. But in the midst of all this, Jesus gives us a timeless warning: Be careful what your eyes see.
The Eye is the Lamp
In this powerful metaphor, Jesus compares the eye to a lamp. Just as a lamp gives light to a room, our eyes allow light into our bodies. But Jesus is talking about more than physical sight—He’s referring to our spiritual vision.
A “healthy eye” means a pure and focused vision—an outlook that is fixed on God and aligned with His truth. When we look at life through a godly lens, our entire being is filled with light. That light brings clarity, wisdom, and moral strength.
When the Eye is Unhealthy
Jesus then warns about the “unhealthy eye”—a heart and mind clouded by sin, distraction, or selfishness. When our spiritual vision is damaged, it lets in darkness. We become morally confused, emotionally drained, and spiritually blind.
And the warning gets stronger: “If the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” This means that self-deception is one of the most dangerous states. Thinking we are right with God while living in sin leaves us in deep spiritual darkness.
Guarding Your Eyes Today
Today’s world presents more temptations than ever before. What we watch on TV, what we scroll past on our phones, and what we allow into our minds through our eyes—these things deeply impact our spiritual health.
Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8 are a perfect complement to Jesus’ teaching: "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure... think about such things."
Ask yourself:
● Are you feeding your soul with light or darkness?
● Are your eyes leading you closer to God or away from Him?
A Call to Focus
Let’s commit to protecting our spiritual vision. Let’s choose content, relationships, and activities that bring light into our lives. Let’s fix our eyes on Jesus—the true Light of the World.
When our eyes are healthy, our hearts follow. And when our hearts are full of light, we become light to others.
Be careful what your eyes see. What enters through your eyes can either fill you with God’s light—or drag you into darkness. Choose wisely.
