The Bible teaches that every human being is born spiritually dead due to sin. This means that without divine intervention, a person is separated from God and unable to experience true spiritual life. However, God provides a way to be made spiritually alive through Jesus Christ. Below are the essential steps outlined in Scripture for someone to move from spiritual death to spiritual life.
1. Recognizing Spiritual Death
The Bible makes it clear that sin results in spiritual death:
“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.” (Ephesians 2:1)
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Every person is born into sin because of the fall of Adam and Eve (Romans 5:12). This sinful nature separates people from God, leaving them spiritually dead. Spiritual death means a person lacks a relationship with God and is unable to live according to His will.
2. Faith in Jesus Christ
The most important step in becoming spiritually alive is placing faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus said: “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24)
Faith in Jesus means believing that He is the Son of God, that He died for our sins, and that He rose again. This faith is not just an intellectual belief but a trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
3. Repentance from Sin
Repentance is turning away from sin and turning toward God. Without repentance, a person remains in spiritual death:
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19)
“But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” (Luke 13:3)
Repentance involves acknowledging sin, feeling sorrow for it, and making a conscious decision to live in obedience to God. It is an essential part of spiritual rebirth.
4. Being Born Again
Jesus explained that spiritual life requires a new birth: “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” (John 3:3)
This new birth is not physical but spiritual. It happens when a person receives Jesus into their life, and the Holy Spirit transforms them. This process, called regeneration, is described in Titus 3:5: “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”
Being born again means a person becomes a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Their desires, actions, and thoughts begin to reflect God’s will.
5. Receiving the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in bringing spiritual life. Jesus said: “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.” (John 6:63)
When someone believes in Christ, they receive the Holy Spirit, who guides, convicts, and empowers them to live a life pleasing to God (Romans 8:9-11).
6. Living by God’s Word
Spiritual growth requires feeding on God’s Word. The Bible describes it as spiritual nourishment: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)
Reading, studying, and applying Scripture helps believers grow in their faith and maintain their spiritual life.
7. Walking in Obedience
A spiritually alive person lives in obedience to God’s commands. Jesus said: “If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15)
Obedience is evidence of a transformed life. It includes loving others, living righteously, and growing in faith. Galatians 2:20 says: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”
Spiritual life comes only through Jesus Christ. Recognizing sin, repenting, believing in Jesus, being born again, receiving the Holy Spirit, studying God’s Word, and obeying His commands are necessary for spiritual transformation. As Ephesians 2:4-5 states: “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”
.This new life is a gift from God, available to anyone who places their faith in Jesus.
