We Are God’s Handiwork

The verse Ephesians 2:10 states: "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (NIV)

This verse carries profound meaning, emphasizing our identity, purpose, and God’s sovereignty in our lives. Let’s explore its significance in detail.

1. We Are God’s Handiwork

The word "handiwork" in Greek is poiēma, meaning something that is skillfully crafted, like a masterpiece. This implies that we are not random or accidental but intentionally and wonderfully made by God. Other Bible passages reinforce this truth:

● Psalm 139:14 – "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

● Genesis 1:27 – "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."

Being God’s handiwork means that we are uniquely designed, reflecting His creativity and love. Just as an artist takes time to shape and perfect a masterpiece, God has intentionally formed each of us with specific gifts, abilities, and a purpose.

2. Created in Christ Jesus

The second part of the verse emphasizes that we are created in Christ Jesus. This points to the transformation that occurs when we accept Christ into our lives. While we were born physically, we experience a spiritual rebirth in Christ (John 3:3).

Paul explains this further in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

This means that our identity is no longer rooted in sin or the world’s standards but in Christ. We are shaped and renewed by His grace, enabling us to live according to God’s will.

3. Created to Do Good Works

God has not only crafted us with care but has also given us a purpose: "to do good works." This phrase clarifies that we are not saved by good works, but we are saved for good works.

● Titus 3:5 – "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy."

● James 2:17 – "Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

Our good works are not a means to earn salvation but an outcome of our faith. When we are in Christ, our lives naturally produce good fruit, glorifying God and serving others.

4. God’s Purpose for Us

The final part of the verse states: "which God prepared in advance for us to do." This reveals God’s divine plan and sovereignty over our lives. He has already designed a path for us, equipping us with the necessary resources and opportunities to fulfill His calling.

● Jeremiah 29:11 – "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."

● Proverbs 3:5-6 – "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Our task is to trust Him, seek His guidance, and walk in the path He has set for us.

Living as God’s Handiwork

Understanding that we are God’s handiwork should shape how we see ourselves and how we live. It means:

1. We have value and purpose – We are not an accident; God made us intentionally.

2. We are new creations in Christ – Our identity is not in our past but in what Christ has done for us.

3. We are called to do good works – Faith and action go hand in hand.

4. God has a plan for us – We can trust that He has prepared the best path for our lives.

Living out this truth brings fulfillment and joy, as we walk in the works that God has designed specifically for us.
