Putting God first is a central theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing total devotion, trust, and obedience to Him above everything else. It means prioritizing God in every aspect of life—our thoughts, actions, relationships, and decisions. Below, we explore key verses that highlight the importance of seeking God first and what it means in practical terms.
1. Seek God First
● Matthew 6:33 – "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."
This verse is part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches about reliance on God rather than worldly concerns. Jesus instructs His followers to prioritize God’s kingdom above all else, assuring them that their needs will be met. Seeking God’s righteousness means living according to His will, trusting that He will provide what is necessary. When we put God first, we demonstrate faith that He is our ultimate provider and sustainer.
2. Love God Above All
● Deuteronomy 6:5 – "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength."
● Matthew 22:37-38 – "Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment."
Loving God with all our heart, soul, and strength means complete devotion. It signifies that our love for Him should be the foundation of everything we do. Jesus reaffirms this in the New Testament, calling it the greatest commandment. When we love God wholeheartedly, our priorities, actions, and desires align with His will. This love is not just emotional but is expressed through obedience and faithfulness to His commands.
3. Trust in God Completely
● Proverbs 3:5-6 – "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
Trusting in God means surrendering our plans and decisions to Him rather than relying on our own wisdom. Often, human understanding is limited, but God sees the bigger picture. Acknowledging Him in all our ways means consulting Him in prayer, following His Word, and making choices that align with His guidance. When we do so, He promises to lead us on the right path.
4. God Above Material Things
● Colossians 3:2 – "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth."
● Exodus 20:3 – "You shall have no other gods before Me."
The world often tempts us to chase after wealth, status, and success. However, God calls us to focus on eternal matters rather than temporary possessions. Colossians 3:2 urges believers to fix their minds on heavenly priorities rather than being consumed by earthly concerns. Exodus 20:3, the first of the Ten Commandments, warns against idolatry—placing anything above God, whether it be money, relationships, or personal ambitions. True fulfillment comes from seeking God above material gain.
5. Dedicate Your Actions to God
● 1 Corinthians 10:31 – "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
● Romans 12:1 – "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service."
Every action, no matter how small, should be done to honor God. This means being mindful of how we live, ensuring that our words, choices, and attitudes reflect His glory. Romans 12:1 encourages believers to offer themselves as "living sacrifices," meaning our entire lives should be acts of worship. Putting God first is not limited to prayer and church attendance but extends to our work, relationships, and daily routines.
How to Put God First in Everyday Life
1. Prioritize Prayer and Bible Study – Spend time in God’s Word and prayer daily to strengthen your relationship with Him.
2. Make God-Centered Decisions – Before making important choices, ask yourself if they align with biblical principles.
3. Serve Others in His Name – Jesus taught that loving and serving others is an expression of loving God (Matthew 25:40).
4. Live with Integrity – Honor God in your work, relationships, and commitments by living according to His truth.
5. Let Go of Worry and Trust Him – Rather than stressing about life’s uncertainties, trust in God’s provision and plan.
Putting God first is not just a one-time decision but a lifelong commitment. It requires intentionality in seeking His will, trusting His plan, and living in obedience to His Word. When we prioritize God, He provides guidance, peace, and blessings that surpass anything the world can offer. As Jesus promised in Matthew 6:33, when we seek His kingdom first, everything else falls into place.
