To “Occupy till I come” is taken from Luke 19:13 (KJV), where Jesus tells the Parable of the Ten Minas (or the Parable of the Pounds). This phrase holds profound theological, practical, and eschatological meaning. Understanding its context and application helps believers live purposefully while awaiting Christ’s return.
Context of Luke 19:11-27
The Parable of the Ten Minas
In Luke 19, Jesus is approaching Jerusalem, and the people expect Him to establish His kingdom immediately. To correct this misunderstanding, Jesus tells a parable about a nobleman who travels to a distant country to receive a kingdom and then returns. Before leaving, he entrusts his servants with ten minas (a form of currency) and instructs them: “Occupy till I come” (Luke 19:13, KJV).
Upon his return, he evaluates their faithfulness in managing the money. Some servants invest and multiply their share, while one servant hides his mina, doing nothing with it. The nobleman rewards the faithful but punishes the unproductive servant.
The nobleman in the parable represents Jesus, who ascended to heaven but will return. The servants represent believers, and the command "occupy" means they are to be diligent and productive in the work of God while awaiting His return.
Meaning of "Occupy Till I Come"
1. A Call to Faithful Stewardship
The word "occupy" in Greek comes from pragmateuomai, which means to engage in business or trade. This implies that believers should actively manage their God-given resources—talents, time, and opportunities—for the benefit of God’s kingdom.
Jesus expects His followers to be faithful stewards, not idle or complacent. Like the servants who invested their minas, Christians are called to be productive with their spiritual and material resources.
2. Staying Engaged in God’s Work
The instruction “till I come” highlights that Christ will return, but in the meantime, believers should remain engaged in their calling. This applies to:
● Spiritual Growth – Deepening one’s relationship with God through prayer, worship, and studying Scripture.
● Evangelism – Spreading the Gospel and leading others to Christ.
● Service – Helping those in need, being a light in the world, and contributing to the Church.
● Work and Life – Honoring God in daily activities, whether in career, family, or ministry.
3. A Warning Against Idleness
The unfaithful servant in the parable failed to use his mina and was reprimanded. This serves as a warning that spiritual stagnation and neglect of duty can lead to loss. Christians must avoid passivity and remain diligent in serving God.
Practical Applications
1. Personal Growth and Discipleship
● Strengthen your faith through Bible study, prayer, and fellowship.
● Use your gifts and talents to serve God and others.
2. Diligence in Work and Ministry
● Whatever your profession, do it as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23).
● Be productive in both spiritual and earthly responsibilities.
3. Sharing the Gospel
● Be an ambassador for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20).
● Support missions, and outreach programs, and disciple others.
4. Living with an Eternal Perspective
● Remember that our time on earth is temporary.
● Store up treasures in heaven by serving God faithfully (Matthew 6:19-20).
The command “Occupy till I come” is a powerful call to action. It urges believers to be faithful, productive, and engaged in God’s work while awaiting Christ’s return. Rather than being passive or fearful, Christians should use their resources, talents, and time wisely, knowing that one day, they will give an account before the Lord.
Are you actively occupying till Christ comes?
