8 habits that are destroying your walk with God

      Our relationship with God is the most valuable aspect of our lives, but it can be weakened or even destroyed by bad habits. The Bible warns us about certain behaviors that can distance us from God, hinder our spiritual growth, and lead to spiritual downfall. Here are eight habits that can negatively impact your walk with God and what the Bible says about them.

1. Neglecting Prayer

      Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. When we stop praying, we cut off our connection with Him, making it easier for doubts, fears, and worldly influences to take control.

● 1 Thessalonians 5:17 – “Pray without ceasing.”

● Matthew 26:41 – “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

      A lack of prayer weakens our ability to resist temptation, understand God’s will, and experience His peace.

2. Ignoring Scripture

      God’s Word is our guide, providing wisdom, direction, and strength. Neglecting it leaves us vulnerable to deception, confusion, and spiritual stagnation.

● Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

● Hosea 4:6 – “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

      Without regularly reading and meditating on the Bible, we risk making decisions that are not in alignment with God’s will.

3. Compromising with Sin

      Sin separates us from God, and when we tolerate even small sins, they grow into major strongholds. Many people justify sinful behavior, thinking it’s “not a big deal,” but sin hardens our hearts.

● James 4:4 – “Friendship with the world means enmity against God.”

● Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

      Compromising with sin eventually leads to spiritual destruction if not repented of.

4. Harboring Unforgiveness

      Unforgiveness creates bitterness, blocks our prayers, and affects our relationship with God. The Bible commands us to forgive, just as God has forgiven us.

● Ephesians 4:31-32 – “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

● Matthew 6:14-15 – Jesus said, “If you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

      Holding onto resentment gives the enemy a foothold in our lives and hinders our spiritual progress.

5. Being Lukewarm in Faith

      A passive, half-hearted approach to Christianity is dangerous. Jesus warned against being lukewarm in our faith, which means being neither fully committed to Him nor rejecting Him.

● Revelation 3:16 – “So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

● Matthew 22:37 – “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”

      God desires a passionate, committed relationship with us, not a casual or indifferent attitude.

6. Neglecting Fellowship with Believers

      Some people believe they don’t need a church or a Christian community, but isolation weakens faith. The fellowship provides encouragement, accountability, and spiritual nourishment.

● Hebrews 10:25 – “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another.”

● Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”

      Surrounding yourself with strong believers helps you grow and stay accountable.

7. Allowing Pride to Take Over

      Pride leads to self-reliance instead of dependence on God. When we think we know better than God or believe we don’t need Him, we set ourselves up for failure.

● Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

● James 4:6 – “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

      Humility allows us to receive God’s wisdom and direction, while pride leads us away from Him.

8. Focusing Too Much on Material Things

      When we prioritize money, success, or material possessions over God, we risk making idols out of them. While material blessings are not sinful, placing them above God is dangerous.

● Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

● 1 Timothy 6:10 – “For the love of money is the root of all evil.”

      God calls us to trust in Him rather than in wealth or worldly success.

      If you recognize any of these habits in your life, don’t be discouraged—God’s grace is available for all who turn back to Him. Repent, seek His guidance, and ask Him for strength to overcome these habits. The closer you walk with God, the more peace, joy, and purpose you will experience.
