An encounter with God is more like having an unmerited visitation from God, which will turn the person’s life around for good. There have been several occasions in the Bible where man had an encounter with God, and each of those occasions upgraded man into functioning extraordinarily. An encounter with God was a daily routine that should not be missed because their daily activities depended on the divine instruction from God at the place of encounter with Him.
Let's start with the first man who lived his daily life through having an encounter with God even though he later failed to maintain his fellowship with God. He is no other person but Adam; he had a tremendous encounter with God, and he became a carrier of God's divine presence, which made his word in Eden the word of God. Genesis 2:18-20 The fact that God had to bring the work of His creation to Adam to name them, means that Adam was never far from His presence in which Adam's daily koinonia with God made him spiritually fit to decide on matters which only God could attend to.
There is a level of encounter a man will have with God that God will have to seek his opinion before making a decision. We see such kind of man in Abraham in Genesis 18:15-33 I wonder how many years of encounters Abraham had with God that built such a relationship with God that God could not hide His intentions from him that he even bargained with God on matters should treat on His own.
Jacob was so cunning that he took his brother's birthright in Genesis 25:29-34, but his encounter with God changed his life. Genesis 32:24-30 There is an encounter that changes a man into a better person. Jacob, who was later named Israel at his place of encounter, is that kind of man.
The life and journey of Moses were through an encounter with God. At first, he met God on a mountain of God in Exodus 3. His level of encounter with God made God do what he says in Exodus 33:17. He occupied a great space in the realm of God, and he was the first and last to physically see God in Exodus 33:18-20. He also had 40 days and nights of encounter with God, received the Ten Commandments, and came out of God’s presence with a shining bright face in Exodus 34:28-35. He did all those exploits because of an encounter he had with God.
What about the disciples of Jesus who also had an encounter with God in the upper room in Jerusalem? When others were at the feast and making merriment, they locked themselves in a room in a quest for an encounter with God in Acts 2:1-4. Their journey of life turned a new shape when their encounter made them supernatural instruments in the hands of God and supernatural beings in the sight of men.
There is a level of communion between God and man that brings down the carnality of man for spirituality to take over the totality of man, and that could be possible at the place of encounter with God. The power of imperfection is subdued at the place of encounter to produce a life of perfection that shows the identity of God supernatural at work in such a person's life.
What happened in the life of David Yonggi Cho and many great men of God was not magical but was a result of an encounter they had with God. Not all of them kissed the feet of Baal, but they earned it through encounter. That is why I pity those so-called men and women of God who go through diabolical means to host God in their places of worship. There is no way a man can survive here on earth without this encounter because those great men had an encounter with God and met Him at a frustrating moment in their lives. Right now, people are living a frustrated life probably because they have not sought to encounter God. God is not refusing a visitation from anyone rather He opened a hand of welcome to all to come to Him in Matthew 11:28, He did not stop there because He went knocking at the door of people's hearts just to get their attention in Revelation 3:20 what more can He do for man to turn to Him?
What is the essence of being a Christian without an encounter with God? It is like living a life of no evidence, and because there is no evidence of which life is bent on living, then such life will fail during the test of life's trials. Not having an encounter with God will make a person commit several atrocities and still claim to be a Christian. To have an encounter is not by being a member of a particular church denomination but by having a personal relationship with God.
Thus, a person's encounter with God determines his spiritual rank in Acts 19:13-17; those men have no encounter with God, and that makes them rankless and unfit to address spiritual matters. There is a spiritual hierarchy of power in the spiritual world that a Christian who has an encounter with God is spiritually elected into power that whatever degree such Christian makes shall be established, even Matthew 18:18-20 confirms it. So, a Christian should not be comfortable with his Christian journey if he has not had an encounter with God.
Now, this is my question to you that is reading this, do you have an encounter with God? If you have not, better go back to the Lord for His visitation.
